Liposuction procedures are used in order to take out stubborn pockets of excess fat that will not seem to disappear no matter how much you exercise. Usually, parts of the stomach, the hips, the abdomen, the thighs, the rear, and parts of the face are the most common locations for liposuction surgery.

People who are realistic about the entire procedure are the best candidates for surgery. Let us be honest: someone who is obese cannot really benefit from liposuction, because it is only designed to remove small areas of fat. For that matter, your skin should still be firm, otherwise you will be left with saggy folds. As with any type of surgery, you need to be healthy before you can be considered a good candidate. There also needs to be a reason you need to surgery - meaning, you have tried a good diet and healthy exercise regime.

There are two different types of liposuction. Tumescent liposuction involves the injection of a solution into areas of excess fat before its removal. It contains a mixture of saline, painkiller, and epinephrine. It makes your blood vessels contract. You are relaxed, which lets the surgeon perform better. As well, the contracted vessels lessen the loss of blood. The mild sedative helps reduce pain as you are having the procedure and after.

Ultrasounds are also used in liposuction - at least, their energy is used. That energy actually causes fat cells to liquefy. This makes it much easier to remove. Laser assisted liposuction works in a similar fashion.

Generally, the procedure for liposuction itself involves many steps. It begins with anaesthesia. This may be a local anaesthesia or a general one. It all depends on how much excess fat you are having removed. By the same token, it can be performed at either a doctor's office or at the hospital. After the anaesthesia has been applied, the surgeon makes a series of small incisions. Through these, whichever suction device being used slides into the incision and removes the fat.

A cannula attached to a device used for suction are the tools used for liposuction procedures. The cannula is inserted through a series of small incisions which are made in areas where there are excess fat. The cuts are made between the skin and the muscles. Sometimes a standard suction pump is used, sometimes a syringe. The resulting body shape is smoother with this method.
